Lyrics

I've Heard the Truth Before
[William Livesay/David Graham ©2005]

He wandered in like an old friend
When he touched down on the streets of paradise
He worked his way thru conversation
Just like fools we listened twice
He trampled on our liberties we were coins for him to spend
We tossed aside our common sense and we stayed loyal ‘til the end
He knows his way around the truth so we hung on every word he said
But it all comes down to what is real like counting all the dead
I've heard the truth before
Now it’s a shoe that doesn’t fit
I've heard the truth before
And I’m trying to get over it
This whole town is boarded up and a parade of picket signs displayed
Streets are lined with homes for sale and mounting debt can't be repaid
He speaks of having hope when it seems that all our hope is gone
He touches some reality that blindly keeps us hanging on
He knows his way around the truth so we hung on every word he said
But it all comes down to what is real like the counting of the dead
I've heard the truth before
Now it’s a shoe that doesn’t fit
I've heard the truth before
I'm trying to get over it
I've heard the truth before
And it left to many dead
I've heard the truth before
And the words keep pounding in my head
I only hope I’m not the joke or the fool who's taken in
Shall we let the games begin
He gulps a pint from a plastic cup and calmly smokes a cigarette
Then shouts the name of the lord our God and promises that he'll protect
A secret weapon candidate who speaks of family ties
It's hard to know the truth from all the shady alibis
I've heard the truth before
Now it’s a shoe that doesn’t fit
I've heard the truth before
I'm trying to get over it
I've heard the truth before
And it left to many dead
I've heard the truth before
And the words keep pounding in my head
